School District Overview:
Indianapolis Public Schools served 34,050 students during the 2008-2009 school year. The district consists of 50 elementary schools that provide education to students in kindergarten through the sixth grade; one elementary school for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade; four schools for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade; one school for students in the sixth through ninth grades; nine schools for students in the seventh and eighth grades; three schools for students in the seventh through twelfth grades; one school for students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade; and two alternative schools.
Indianapolis Public Schools offers more magnet and option programs than any other school system in the state of Indiana. The district also offers vocational training in high-tech facilities, and is equipped with services for students who require nontraditional learning methods. These programs and services are provided in order to eliminate student achievement gaps, as Indianapolis Public Schools’ vision is “to be widely recognized as a model urban school system that is guided by high expectations and standards of excellence” by 2010.
