Indianapolis Real Estate | Revitalized Irvington
Posted by ICON Realty Team on Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 at 9:35am.Irvington is a historic community on the eastside of Indy that’s finally coming into its own. If you haven’t seen Irvington in a while, as they say – you haven’t seen Irvington. It isn’t just the new Starbucks, antique stores, or even the new puppy bakery – it’s as if the area’s got a whole new attitude.
New businesses, increased community activism, $1 million in urban developments funds, the Irvington Development Organization, and beautiful parks and incredible gardens have brought Irvington to life – reminders of its earliest days as the first streetcar suburb of Indy in the 1870s. Drive through tree-lined streets and gaze at some architecturally grand houses, some of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whether it’s a brick Italianate or a cozy bungalow you’re looking for, there are no cookie-cutter houses here.
Started by Quaker abolitionists, Irvington still has an active Quaker community, as well as several other local faith groups. Annual community events are well-attended and include a Halloween party, gardens tour, ghost tours, Taste of Irvington, and more. Students in Irvington can choose from Indianapolis Public Schools or private (but free) charter schools.
The local coffee shops offer open-mic poetry nights, the independent bookstore often features local writers, but for the best feel of the neighborhood, you’ve absolutely got to go to Dufour’s for breakfast, Rock-Cola’s 50s café got coke with chocolate syrup, and Papa Roux for Cajun food that’s almost better than what you can get in the Big Easy.
