Carmel Indiana Named Top Place to Live

Bert Sperling at BestPlaces.net recently came up with a list of the 10 best cities to live in America. His list was created by taking a number of factors into consideration including crime rates and statistics, population and growth, the number of colleges and universities in the area, and access to entertainment opportunities like shows, museums, and sporting events. In addition, Sperling also looked for a good measure of economic stability when making his final determination.
Compared to the 90s, this emphasis on stability might seem like a switch in priorities. Back then all people were looking for was a house in a neighborhood with a low crime rate and good schools. Economic stability wasn’t really a concern. However, with the recession priorities have shifted, and home buyers are more concerned with finding affordable housing and a stable job.
According to Sperling, these rough economic times have made cities that manage to hold steady look more and more attractive. Indianapolis-Carmel ranks so highly because it scores high both in terms of affordability and stability. The cost of an average home in the Indy-Carmel area is $120,200. That’s about $50,000 below the national median price of $171,700.
A resident’s money stretches further here too. The cost of living in the Indy-Carmel area is 17.8% lower than the national average. Other pluses for the city include Carmel’s Central Park, Indianapolis sports teams, and an unemployment rate holding steady at 8.8%. The national average unemployment rate is 10.2%.
When it comes to jobs in Indianapolis-Carmel, several companies are currently hiring: WellPoint Inc., Eli Lilly, Ernst & Young, and Clarian Health.
Indianapolis-Carmel ranked tenth in a list of as many top cities. Other cities that came in ahead of Indianapolis include in descending order: Pittsburgh, Buffalo-Niagra Falls, Omaha, Fort Worth-Arlington, Austin-Round Rock, Des Moines, Madison, Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, and Denver-Aurora.
